In my last few blogs I've talked non-stop about the girl. Let's face it, she's provided much to talk about in her 6 years of life. But there is another child here too. He deserves time in the spot light.
And that my friends is my topic for today. The boy. He, too, had to deal with the trauma of having a sister that was sick. A lot of times the other children really suffer more because so much time is spent making their sibling well again. They are left out of so many things and have to pay the price of having a sick brother or sister.
I'd like to think we did our best to make sure he was not forgotten during the fight. He's really a good boy despite his mouth and 13 year old attitude. He hasn't suffered an untimely demise due to attitude issues, so that's a good sign right? He, too, was helping us fight the demons. He's always been so supportive of his sister. Always has tried to make her smile when she didn't feel like it.
Hell, he even made her things at school to brighten her days. Of course there were times and will continue to be times when he really would love for her to go away but that's a normal sibling thing. And we always took the time each week to spend a day or several with just him so he knew that we loved him just as much. I know that has made all the difference in his world for sure.
Anyway...........................
I have to admit this boy child of mine is really a bright boy. I'm biased of course but what parent isn't? We dread when school starts again each year because there's always something or some teacher who just doesn't get him. Being that we live in a small town, the schools lack a certain something. They have classes geared towards gifted children but they don't let him in. Their reasoning is because he won't keep up with his homework in the normal classes so we would be setting him for failure. I completely disagree. This child can ignore all his homework assignments but still pass all the tests with a 100%. Well, in all classes but English. That class you actually have to do the homework to pass the tests. He hates that class.
These teachers some how missed the clues right in front of them. If the boy can pass their silly little tests without much effort wouldn't that mean that he gets the subject? Wouldn't that mean that he probably isn't doing the homework because let's face it, it's boring. I know, I know, all kids hate homework and it's always boring but if he knows the subject without it, why would anyone think he'd take the time to do the work? If a child is bored and the homework or subject proves not to be challenging, shouldn't they figure out a way to challenge said child?
I fight each year on behalf of my son so our schools will do something for him. Each year, unfortunately, I'm unsuccessful. Makes me feel like I'm failing my son. The new school year will start again in just a couple of weeks. I'm not looking forward to it at all. The boy is really excited to start school though. He's going to be the upper class man this year. A big 8th grader!
And by big I mean BIG. The boy is taller then I am at 5'7". He's ginormous! Someone, meaning myself, needs to start taking the mallet and whacking him on the head for sure. I hate that my baby boy is getting so big. He's growing up so fast and it sucks.
Although I would like to bury him in the backyard on occasion, I do love him so much. His attitude and mouth I could do without but ya know, that's what duct tape is for!!

Wait... can we bury them in the backyard? That would be nice. LOL Great post, honey!
Yes duct tape!! Never forget the tape :)a
It would be so nice if the school system actually worked with you. Good luck.
Has he ever been tested for the gifted program? If not, maybe try to talk to your pediatrician. We were able to have our dd tested on our own and then show the school the test scores and they had to accept them.
Let me know if I can help. I think we're both in Florida.
Good luck. What a struggle it can be with the school system. Let me know if you need any help "persuading" some teachers! I know what a small town can be like!
